What is Dhaga Mishri?
Dhaga Mishri literally means Threaded Sugar. It is made by crystallizing sugar syrup around fine threads, usually cotton, which results in long, thread-like formations of rock sugar. It has a pure white, slightly transparent appearance and a mildly sweet taste.
How is it Made?
- Sugar syrup is prepared by boiling refined sugar in water.
- Fine threads (typically cotton) are dipped into the syrup.
- The threads are hung in a cool place where sugar begins to crystallize on them over time.
- Once crystallization is complete, the threads are dried and cut into pieces.
Uses of Dhaga Mishri
- Sweetener in Ayurvedic medicines, milk, or herbal teas.
- Mouth freshener, often eaten with fennel seeds (saunf) after meals.
- Prasad or offering in temples and religious rituals.
- Soothing remedy for sore throat and cough.
- Energy booster – provides instant energy due to its high glucose content.
